Types of New Zealand Government Scholarships
1# Scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate studies
This is a full-time higher education scholarship for foreign students who are eligible to study full-time at a New Zealand academic institution or university in the Pacific.
2# Short Term Training Scholarship for citizens of Southeast Asia and Timor-Leste
These are short skills training bursaries for staff from eligible Southeast Asian countries and from Timor-Leste.
3# Short Course Training for Pacific and Timor-Leste Citizens
These are short bursaries for skills training and work experience for staff from relevant Pacific and Timor-Leste countries.
4# English Language Training for Officials Scholarship (NZELTO)
These are short bursaries for government officials from eligible African and Asian countries to New Zealand for training in English.
Eligibility Criteria
In order to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Have citizenship of New Zealand
- Be a full-time student (minimum of 15 credits per semester) at an accredited U.S. institution that is fully accredited by its regional/national accrediting agency
- Satisfy all other eligibility requirements set forth in each individual program’s Terms & Conditions.

Scholarships such as these are great options for international students who don’t have access to funding from their home country, but there are plenty of other options. Find a scholarship program by searching study abroad scholarships or similar terms on websites like GoAbroad and Funding Scholarships. While studying abroad is generally more expensive than taking classes at home, many scholarships will pay all or part of your tuition expenses.
Does it Cover Flight Cost?
Unfortunately, no. You will have to arrange your own flights and pay for them out of pocket. In exchange, however, you’ll receive: Round trip airfare from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) / Portland International Airport (PDX) Two weeks’ worth of all-inclusive accommodations, meals and snacks All tuition fees for all courses One week holiday at Bay of Islands Resort Tauranga Aer Lingus flight back home after finishing studies.
