What are the Saltire Scholarships?

The Saltire Scholarships are bursaries for international students to study at Scottish universities. The scholarships, named after Scotland’s national flag, aim to attract high-achieving students from around the world who are passionate about their chosen field of study. Students can apply for up to four courses across two academic years using only one application form; there is no limit on how many countries you can apply from as long as you meet eligibility requirements.

Who is eligible to apply?

International students (for example, American, Canadian, Australian) who are interested in studying a postgraduate course at Scottish universities are eligible to apply. A full list of available courses can be found here.

How much do they cost and how do I pay them back if I am accepted?

Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships are funded by The Scottish Government, and are available for international students who wish to study at a higher education institution (at degree level or above) within Scotland.

Scholarships will be paid directly from your academic institution on your behalf. This amount will normally be included in your course fee, but please check with the individual university or college before you accept any offer of admission. Please note that other fees associated with studying abroad may need to be considered too.

What are the course requirements and what can I study at Scottish Universities?

Scottish universities have long been held in high regard and offer excellent education at all levels. There are five main types of Scottish degrees: Honours (four years), Bachelors (three years), Masters (one year) and PhDs. Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships provides funding for postgraduate study abroad, usually taught Master’s courses, with most students opting to study in Scotland or Europe.

How do I apply for the scholarships if I have never applied before?

Just visit our website and click on Apply at the top right of your screen. This will bring you to another page where you can complete an online application form. After completing it, you will be able to send us your supporting documents (required and recommended) by uploading them or attaching them via e-mail.

A word of advice: make sure all your documents are clear and legible, because once they are submitted, we cannot view them again if anything is not clear or missing! Once your application has been successfully completed and we have received all necessary documents, we will go through all applications on a first come first served basis as long as all necessary criteria have been met with no interviews/assessments being required from our end.
