Who can apply?
Applicants must be a graduating high school senior planning to attend a four-year university in the United States. Students must also hold citizenship of any country outside of North America. Eligible countries include:

- Mexico
- South Korea
- China
- Japan
- Taiwan
- Vietnam
- New Zealand
- Australia

In order for an applicant’s country of citizenship to be eligible for application consideration they must meet one or more of these three criteria: Have at least 10% of all foreign students enrolled in American universities come from that country; or have an annual total immigration rate of 6 or higher (in thousands) from that country; or have U.S. immigrant population from that country higher than 3%.
The selection criteria
Students will be selected for The Knight-Hennessy Scholars Program on academic merit, leadership potential, initiative, willingness to take risks, capacity for self-reflection and analysis, potential for significant contributions in their fields of endeavor.
Each Knight-Hennessy Scholar will receive an award of up to $75,000 per year over a five year period. Each scholar will also receive access to opportunities in Silicon Valley through direct engagement with Knight Foundation and other partners. International scholars may participate in full or part time study at Stanford University or UC Berkeley if they wish; these students may also pursue a master’s degree at one of six partner universities.

The application process to apply for Knight Hennessy Scholarship
Students must apply for admission to a U.S. college or university and complete an online application detailing their current academic performance, work experience, community involvement, future goals, and reasons for applying for a scholarship.
Applicants are encouraged to submit two video interviews that can be up to five minutes in length; one should capture his or her perspective on life from within their own community; another should demonstrate what makes them uniquely qualified to study abroad in another country.
Knight-Hennessy Scholars are selected based on their academic excellence, demonstrated leadership potential, leadership within their community or field of interest, financial need, and his or her intended use of a global education after graduation. The deadline for applications is January 15 of each year.
