The Government of Canada offers a number of scholarships for international students, including the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. These scholarships are open to all international students, regardless of their country of origin.
Individual universities and colleges also offer scholarships for international students wishing to pursue a Master’s degree in Canada. These scholarships are usually need-based, and may have additional requirements such as being from a specific country or having a certain GPA.

Following is the List of Master Scholarships in Canada for the year 2023-2024 available to all international students
#1 Vanier Canada Graduate Master Scholarships in Canada
The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) was created to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and to establish Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher learning. The scholarship is worth $50,000 per year for three years.
To be eligible for a Vanier CGS, applicants must:
- have completed, at a minimum, the equivalent of a Canadian bachelor’s degree by the commencement of their doctoral studies with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.33; OR have completed, over the course of their entire program of study, at least two full years of graduate-level work with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 on a scale of 4.33;
- be engaged in doctoral studies that will lead to a PhD or be enrolled in professional doctorate programs (e.g., dentistry, medicine, optometry, pharmacy or veterinary medicine);
- demonstrate leadership skills and high standards of scholarly achievement in graduate studies; and
- have achieved a first-class average, as determined by their graduate unit, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent.
#2 University of Waterloo International Master’s and Doctoral Awards
The University of Waterloo International Master’s and Doctoral Awards are prestigious scholarships awarded to highly-qualified international students. These awards are based on academic excellence and provide full funding for the duration of your studies.
If you are an international student who is interested in pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Waterloo, you may be eligible for one of these awards. To be considered, you must have an excellent academic record and meet all other eligibility criteria.
The University of Waterloo International Master’s and Doctoral Awards are extremely competitive. Only a limited number of awards are available each year, and successful applicants will be those who demonstrate the highest level of academic excellence.
If you are awarded one of these scholarships, you will receive full funding for your studies. This includes tuition fees, living expenses, and travel costs. You will also have access to a number of support services to help you adjust to life in Canada and succeed in your studies.
#3 Ontario Graduate Scholarship
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) is a competitive, merit-based scholarship awarded to eligible graduate students in all disciplines who are enrolled full-time in their first year of study at an eligible Ontario university.
The OGS program aims to encourage and promote excellence in graduate studies at the province’s publicly funded universities. Each year, the program awards approximately 3,000 scholarships. The value of each award is $5,000.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an OGS, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
- Have demonstrated academic excellence in your previous studies (e.g., upper second-class honours or better);
- Be enrolled as a full-time student in your first year of graduate studies at an eligible Ontario university;
- Not have already held an OGS; and,
- Not be receiving another major scholarship or fellowship from any level of government (federal, provincial/territorial or municipal), or from any other source (including your university).
#4 Ontario Trillium Master Scholarships in Canada
The Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS) is a prestigious award for international students studying at the doctoral level. The scholarship is worth up to $40,000 per year for four years and is intended to cover a student’s living expenses.
In order to be eligible for the OTS, students must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and submit a detailed research proposal outlining their proposed area of study. The OTS is open to all fields of study and is offered by the Ontario government in partnership with universities in the province.

#5 University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships
The University of Manitoba offers a number of graduate fellowships to outstanding students wishing to pursue a graduate degree at the University. These fellowships are intended to support students who demonstrate academic excellence and who contribute to the diversity of the graduate student body.
Fellowships are awarded on the basis of academic merit and are tenable for either one or two terms of study, depending on the program. Fellowships typically provide funding for tuition, books, and living expenses.
Applications for University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships are available online and must be submitted by March 1st for programs starting in September.
#6 University of Calgary Graduate Awards
There are many scholarships and awards available to graduate students at the University of Calgary. Some of these are entirely funded by the university, while others may require a small amount of financial contribution from the student.
- President’s Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to high-achieving students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and leadership potential. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for four years of full-time study, as well as a $5,000 annual stipend.
- Dean’s Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate excellent academic achievement and leadership potential. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for four years of full-time study, as well as a $3,000 annual stipend
- Faculty of Arts Graduate Scholarship: This scholarship is awarded to students enrolled in the Faculty of Arts who demonstrate excellent academic achievement. The scholarship covers tuition and fees for four years of full-time study, as well as a $2,000 annual stipend.
#7 Trudeau Foundation Scholarships
Every year, the Trudeau Foundation awards up to 25 scholarships to outstanding students pursuing doctoral studies in Canada. The scholarships are worth $40,000 per year for four years, and are open to students in any field of study.
To be eligible for a Trudeau Foundation scholarship, you must:
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
- Be enrolled in, or have been accepted into, a full-time doctoral program at a Canadian university;
- Demonstrate academic excellence; and
- Show leadership potential and a commitment to public engagement.

#8 UBC Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships
The UBC Graduate Global Leadership Fellowships are available to outstanding international students who demonstrate exceptional leadership potential and who are interested in pursuing a career in public service. The fellowships provide full tuition and a living stipend for two years of study at UBC. Fellows are also paired with a mentor from the Canadian Foreign Service.

#9 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to outstanding postdoctoral scholars in all fields of study. The program is designed to attract and retain top talent, both nationally and internationally, to Canada.
There are 70 fellowships available each year, worth $70,000 per year for two years. Fellowships are awarded through a peer-reviewed competition process and are tenable at Canadian institutions.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicants must be either Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada at the time of application.
- Applicants must have completed, or expect to complete, a PhD no more than two years before the start date of their fellowship. There is no age limit for applicants.
- Applicants must intend to pursue their postdoctoral studies at a Canadian institution.
- Applicants must not have held a previous Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship or another major fellowship such as a CIHR Doctoral Research Award, NSERCPostdoctoral Fellowship, SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship, etc.
#10 NSERC Postgraduate scholarships
NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships are available for Canadian and international students who are enrolled in a full-time, research-based Master’s or Doctoral degree program at a recognized university in Canada. NSERC Postgraduate Scholarships provide financial support to high-caliber students who undertake graduate studies in the natural sciences or engineering. This includes:
- A $17,500 annual stipend for two years (Master’s) or three years (Doctoral)
- $2,500 per year of research allowance
Eligible students must be nominated by their university. Candidates will be assessed on their academic record, research potential, and personal qualities such as creativity, initiative, and leadership.
To be eligible for an NSERC Postgraduate Scholarship, candidates must:
- Be enrolled in their first year of a Master’s or Doctoral program at a recognized university in Canada; OR
- Be transferring from a Master’s to a Doctoral program; AND
- Have completed, within the calendar year preceding the date of application submission, no more than 20 months of full-time study (or its equivalent) towards their first degree; AND
- Not have held an NSERC scholarship at the Masters level or above within the past two years.
